The Department of Neurology at City Hospital facilitates the latest diagnosis and treatment of various diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, with emphasis on the following major diseases: cerebrovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis), degenerative diseases, diseases of the peripheral nervous system (radiculitis, disc herniation, plexitis, neuropathies), epilepsy, dementia and conditions associated with dizziness, headache, waist and back ache, neurotic conditions, etc.
The core of the Department is a modern center for treatment of strokes in acute phase (Comprehensive Stroke Unit), designed in accordance to the Bulgarian standards of Neurology and following the European (European Stroke Organization) and American recommendations. The Department of Neurology admits emergency patients with acute cerebrovascular diseases in the following clinical pathways:
(1) Ischemic stroke without thrombolysis
(2) Ischemic stroke with thrombolysis
(3) Parenchymal brain hemorrhage
(4) Subarachnoid hemorrhage
(5) Cerebral vein and dural sinus thrombosis
We perform advanced diagnostics and prophylaxis of patients with transient ischemic attacks (TIA), vascular dementia and other rare cerebrovascular diseases. We provide 10 beds, equipped with all necessary facilities for the treatment and care of patients. We work in shifts, providing neurological emergency assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
The team of the Department consists of neurologists with specialty and certificates in the basic highly-specialized activities and Head of the Department is Associate Professor Mark Klisurski, MD.
